Children’s Glasses
August is the vision and learning month. This article is going to address children’s glasses.
A lot of parents are of the notion that glasses may be unnecessary for their child.
They come to me and tell me that they don’t like to see their children in glasses. They attribute glasses to meaning that the child is sick.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. Children need glasses for various reasons often very different than for adults.
In the first five to six years of life a child’s visual system is developing and growing and sometimes glasses may play an important role to ensure that the visual system develops normally.
There are cases where glasses are mandatory.
- Glasses can in some cases, help to straighten eyes when they are misaligned or crossed
- They provide better vision so that the child can function better in their environment.
- Spectacles provide protection especially if the child has only one eye or if the other eye has poor vision.
- In the case of a lazy eye or a fragile eye where the other is good, Glasses may be needed to strengthen the weak eye
Some parents complain that when their children get glasses they often do not want to wear them. It is important that parents demonstrate a positive attitude about their children’s glasses otherwise they may show resistance to wearing them, especially if the child is having difficulty in the classroom.
A question that often comes up is this: Will my child’s eyes get worse or will they be more dependent on the glasses? The answer to this is no. If a child does not wear the glasses prescribed, normal visual development can be affected.
Adjusting
To help your child adjust to their glasses, it is important to get a good frame that is comfortable and to make sure that the eyes are in the center of the lens and of course, that the lens material provides excellent protection.
After receiving their glasses, it is important to make sure that your child adjusts well which should take about two weeks. If the child complains about not seeing well, please contact the eye doctor.
