Dear Doctor: I recently got a prescription from an Eye Doctor, the Doctor swears that the prescription is correct, however, I still do not see properly and I have headaches whenever I wear the glasses for an extended period. Is this possible?
Dear Patient: Thank you for the question. I am sure that there are quite a few patients that can relate to your story. My answer will be yes and no. Here is why:
Sometimes especially for farsighted people and people who have problems focusing, the prescription may be exactly what they need, however, because of excessive near work and over focusing of the eye muscles, the prescription may seem to be too strong. I wrote about Pseudomyopia in my last article, this is similar.
It is possible that the glasses are in actual fact too strong and lowering the power could help to alleviate the symptoms. Bear in mind that the final strength of the glasses depends on what you tell the practitioner during the eye exam.
There is also the possibility that the glasses could also be too weak. Some practitioners tend to prescribe a little weaker than you actually need in order to give the eye muscles the ability to relax more.
In the case of Bifocal and Progressive lenses, the height and width of the reading area can play a role.
Sometimes the problem has nothing to do with your eyes but more to do with the lenses. There could be the possibility of a manufacturers defect in producing the lenses.
In conclusion, the best piece of advice I can give here is to go back to your Eye Doctor and ask them to retest the glasses and your eyes. Sometimes all it needs is a minor adjustment and that should not be a problem.
